How do we define elegance?
We define elegance as anything that contributes to the well-being of human beings in a meaningful way, without being loud, tasteless, attention seeking, or intrusive. Elegant people understand quality, and emphasize quality over quantity in clothing, interior design, behavior, choice of music, choice of friends, choice of entertainment, or pieces of Art. Being elegant and have refined taste is not something one can purchase for money. It is not a privilege of wealthy people. Often, elegant people are described as radiating spiritual balance, harmony with their environment, and rich intellect combined with a desire for simplicity and basics. A powerful example for the above principles is Coco Chanel's white piping on her simple black dresses, blazers or coats. The idea of subtle emphasis was later applied to other color combinations, such as gray with black, taupe with black or white, etc.
Elegance also involves the ability of finding the right proportions, and setting focal points that underline the whole by enlisting help from details. Elegance is a skill, often combined with innate hunger for beauty and internal peace. Elegance is not about being perfect; rather, it is about awareness of the imperfect as it is juxtaposed with perfect. This theory is embedded in some philosophies, such as Zen. In Zen gardens, a single smooth rock is often placed in a group of other rocks with rugged surface.
Elegance in home decor can be established, for example, by picking up one main color, shape, or theme (let's say, orange butterfly); then placing items that match the main theme in various, neutral color backgrounds throughout the house; while the rest of the furniture and textiles remain low key.
In clothing, elegance means to appear well dressed regardless of the money one spends on apparel and accessories. Finding the main solid color theme, then following through by placing emphasis points picked from these colors, is a must for the elegant person. An example would be, to wear solid color shoes, silk scarf and handbag with a multi-color dress or coat. Similarly, a solid color dress can be wonderfully enhanced by the cheerful, colorful print of a silk scarf that includes the color of the dress. Setting tiny accents, such as a pearl necklace or brooch enhancing a little black dress or a solid color sweater, is another way of expressing understated elegance. The rule is: Less is more. Meaning, if you already have chosen a rather heavy pearl bracelet, do not wear a heavy necklace, too; a fine thin gold necklace would do. With the same token, a beautiful pearl choker and matching earrings are enough for an evening dress, no need to have the heavy pearl bracelet, too. Proportions and discipline are two other key terms often mentioned together with elegance.
It is not without a reason that some of the World’s famous fashion designers like Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Schiaparelli, Marc Jacobs, Celine (Paris), Louis Vuitton, Trussardi, Prada, Fendi, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Tiffany, Adrienne Vittadini, Cartier, etc., have gained such fame. Their understanding of how to create classically elegant, timeless clothing, shoes, handbags, jewelry made them role models for generations of fashion designers to come.
